Abstract

The focus of this subject is on helping teachers develop theoretical understandings, curriculum applications, and practical pedagogical strategies necessary to design, implement and assess effective programs for students in the intermediate division, grades 7-10. Teachers will learn to combine their knowledge of active student engagement, program planning and delivery for adolescent learners and their understanding of particular subject matter identified as their teachable subject. The first half of the subject focuses on developmental principles and characteristics of adolescent learners and explores program delivery models. The second half of the subject examines the English Curriculum, resources and instructional pedagogies for the adolescent learner.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
* be able to understand and implement Ontario Ministry of Education English Curriculum expectations and Ontario Ministry of Education and district school board policies and guidelines related to the adolescent;
* be able to have the theoretical understanding and foundation necessary to design, implement and assess programs for the adolescent learner;
* be able to understand how to use, accommodate and modify expectations, strategies and assessment practices based on the developmental or special needs of the adolescent;
* be able to create learning environments conducive to the intellectual, social, emotional, physical, linguistic, cultural, spiritual and moral development of the adolescent;
* be able to work collaboratively with in-school personnel, parents/guardians and the community;
* be able to access a variety of resources, including technological resources, within and beyond the educational system to enhance and support student learning;
* be able to demonstrate the ability to integrate information and communication technology into teaching practice;
* be able to demonstrate an openness to innovation and change; and
* be able to inquire into practice through reflection, active engagement and collaboration.

The CSU Additional Qualifications subjects are firmly grounded in the Ontario College of Teachers Standards of Practice and the Ethical Standards. These standards are woven through each of the modules in this program and form an integral part of the learning. While all of the standards have relevance to all of the modules, some are particularly thematically representative of content covered and are articulated in each of the descriptions of the modules.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
* The Standards of Practice for the Teaching Profession and the Ethical Standards
* Understanding theories of adolescent development (social, emotional, physical, intellectual, linguistic, cultural, spiritual and moral), both historic and current, as they relate to the adolescent learner
* Understanding learning theories and the particular learning needs of the adolescent
* Understanding theories of exceptionality as they relate to the adolescent learner
* Recognizing and understanding curricular implications of educational destinations - work, college and university
* Understanding the theoretical foundations of English
* Understanding learning theory specific to English
* Demonstrating knowledge of Ministry of Education curriculum
* Identifying, accessing, assessing and integrating community, print, electronic and collegial resources that link closely to the Ontario English Curriculum
* Employing instructional strategies appropriate for the adolescent learner for both individual and group learning experiences
* Using, accommodating, and modifying expectations, strategies and assessment practices based on the developmental or special needs of adolescent students
* Understanding, devising and employing a variety of assessment and evaluation instruments appropriate to the developmental stage of students and the delivery of the English Curriculum
* Implementing effective classroom management strategies appropriate for the adolescent learner in English
