EEL204 Child Health and Safety (8)

In this subject students will investigate the processes, regulations and requirements that inform the policies and practices in children's services to ensure young children are safe and protected. This subject will develop student knowledge of health and safety issues and provide opportunity to discuss new ways of protecting and caring for young children. They will work in a collaborative team to prepare an information booth for presentation at a community event, and provide information, and instruction on safe practices to families. Their knowledge of relevant policies and practices will be examined in a multi question exam.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • have examined health and safety practices within early childhood settings
  • have developed an understanding of the basis for ensuring the provision of a safe hygienic learning environment and the development of healthy eating habits
  • be able to understand and apply basic procedures for infants and sick children and maintain practices to prevent transmission of disease
  • be able to identify the skills, knowledge and values that underpin a healthy lifestyle and apply a variety of teaching/learning/play strategies to selected content that will encourage their development in the young child
  • be aware of specific issues relevant to child protection within settings for children aged from birth to 12 years
The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Regulations for health and Safety
  • Developmental health issues
  • Developing the expo display on nominated health and safety topic
