EEL422 The Impact of Online on Distance Education (4)

Abstract

Distance education was already well established when the Internet  became public. Pre-internet distance education was constrained by the limitations of its three main modes of communication: correspondence, audio-only, and audio-visual. The online environment provided an avenue to extend those modes of communication, resulting in synchronous and asynchronous forms of educational/training delivery.
This subject will examine the ubiquitous nature of networked and mobile technologies and social media in the business, government and education sectors and the opportunities they provide for access and innovation. Discussion covers various issues, problems, and solutions related to online learning, professional development and credentialing. Topics include knowledge management, performance improvement, delivery of learning and development, online student services, mobile technologies and evaluating learning and development.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to develop skills in the use of learning technologies;
  • be able to explore a set of theoretical frameworks for analysing learning technologies and apply those frameworks to help them select technologies appropriate to their context;
  • be able to explore and analyse a wide range of formal and informal learning environments, including e-learning, computer-supported collaborative learning, instructional software, and social media;
  • be able to discuss the characteristics of their workplaces, their instructional strategies, and the technologies that support teaching and learning; and
  • be able to develop skills in the design of educational media, and the integration of design thinking with scholarship in education.
