In this subject, students will learn about the socio-cultural nature of language and language use and the importance of teachers providing direct and focused literacy instruction to support pupil learning in all secondary curriculum areas, with particular focus on Indigenous and Language Backgrounds Other Than English (LBOTE) learners. We investigate the language and literacy demands across the curriculum areas of the secondary school. A social view of language provides a framework for considering links between language and social contexts, the importance of teachers ensuring the building of field knowledge through oral language, and the use of authentic assessment tasks that allow students to demonstrate their learning outcomes. It also emphasises student teachers' own skills in terms of professional writing and those text forms associated with emergent technologies.
