This subject will use a strengths based approach to explore educationally challenging and supportive environments for young children. It explores concepts such as resilience and risk through an ecological perspective which focuses on the interaction between context and the individual. Strengths based approaches recognise strengths as well as the challenges faced by people in families and communities. It also draws on social justice principles to support self determined goals as the basis for effective change. The subject recognises the pivotal role of quality early childhood education to the wellbeing of children, families and communities.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • identify social justice issues and challenges surrounding early childhood contexts that affect the wellbeing of children, families and communities;
  • understand the development and implementation of strengths based approaches to working in early childhood education;
  • understand and critically analyse the use of a strengths approach and an ecological theoretical perspective when working in early childhood contexts;
  • develop ability to identify, and cater for, the strengths and needs of children and families, including children from rural and remote, lowSES and Indigenous communities; culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds; and children with special and complex support needs;
  • identify, develop and justify an appropriate range of solutionsbased, resilience raising strategies to identify and address risks affecting children, families and communities; and,
  • focus on the application of strengths approaches to the educational workplaces and to the community settings in which they are working.
The subject will cover the following topics:

- The Strengths Approach: history & development.
- Theory, Research and Practice: What do they tell us about social justice issues affecting children, families and communities?
- Considering Early Childhood Educational Contexts: Links with strengths approaches and ecological perspectives.
- Implementing a Strengths Approach: Solutions-based practice, raising resilience and risk management.
- Critical Reflection about Strengths-based Practice.
- Conducting a Strengths-Based project: Workplace and community implementations.
