Abstract

Sports Media 1 introduces students to the historical and contemporary connections between sport and the media and serves as a foundation for further study in this field. Sport and media have a unique connection, as sport and all forms of media have changed each other and continue to do so. It is impossible to describe sport and media as discreet independant social institutions, rather, as overlapping and corporate organisations. This subject explores prominent sports journalists in history and their reporting style, the impact of television on sports, the contemporary nature of sports journalism, investigative sports journalism and the notion of sports media as the 'toy department' of news. Sports media 1 provides students with knowledge of the complex interrelationship between sport and media, particularly in relation to concepts of gender and culture.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to compare and contrast the significant and pivotal historical developments in the relationship between sport and the media;
  • be able to articulate informed opinions about the positive and negative consequences of the mediatisation of professional sport, and how ethical conduct relates to this mediatisation;
  • be able to describe the ways in which sport influences media landscapes;
  • be able to describe the changing landscape of sports media as a professional practice;
  • be able to investigate and explain the ways that recent developments in technology, such as digital cultures, are reshaping sports media.

  • The symbiotic relationship between the media and sports;
  • The history and evolving nature of sports media, television and sports journalists;
  • The mediatisation of sport, including television rights and sports marketing;
  • The contemporary culture of sports journalism;
  • Female sports journalists;
  • Sports journalism in changing media landscapes;
  • Investigative sports journalism;
  • The ethics of sports media
