EHR522 Exercise for Metabolic & Renal Conditions (8)

In this subject students will investigate anatomical and physiological mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of metabolic conditions, such as insulin resistance, gestational diabetes, type I diabetes, and type II diabetes mellitus, further to renal conditions and their associated integrated systemic effects. Students will examine pharmacological interventions from authentic client data provided by referring primary health-care providers and integrate this with exercise related information obtained through initial consultation to undertake client needs analysis. This information will be evaluated and applied to effectively pre-screen and stratify client risk, formulate safe and effective exercise prescriptions, and evaluate client health outcomes. A Residential School will provide students with an opportunity to develop practical skills where a practice-based education framework will be used in preparation for professional roles.  Ultimately, this subject will increase student knowledge and skill application of metabolic and/or renal conditions to a level of that aligned and required within clinical exercise practice.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to synthesise pertinent evidence-based literature related to underlying pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the initiation, development and progression, and treatment of metabolic and/or renal disorders;
  • be able to critique and rationalise screening tools related to medical and health-history information during initial consultation with clients possessing actual, or risk factors for, metabolic and/or renal pathophysiologies;
  • be able to describe and evaluate pertinent pathophysiological data when assessing metabolic and/or renal client needs for exercise;
  • be able to develop and apply safe exercise test procedures for clients with metabolic and/or renal disorders that demonstrate efficiency and validity;
  • be able to communicate professionally and interact empathetically and respectfully with clients possessing metabolic and/or renal conditions.

Residential School
This subject contains a 3 day Compulsory Residential School.

Distance Education students are required to attend a three (3) day COMPULSORY Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period.  This Residential School is necessary in order to develop practical skills to comply with accreditation requirements.

Special Resources

Distance Education students are required to attend a Residential School scheduled during the Residential School period to access laboratory facilities.  This will require students to arrange and finance their own travel and accommodation.
