EMA415 Curriculum Studies: Creative Arts (8)

Abstract

In this subject the students will be introduced to the concepts and ideas that underpin the Key Learning Area of the Creative Arts, which includes the four artforms of dance, drama, visual arts and music. The students will acquire knowledge, skills and experience and develop appropriate strategies for planning, programming and teaching art, music, dance and drama curricula in schools. The students will experience the materials and subject matter of the four artforms and develop skills in their use.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to demonstrate knowledge, skills and a range of strategies for teaching, learning and assessing in the K-6 school Creative Arts classroom, including the use of ICTs
- have developed an understanding and appreciation of art, music, dance and drama through reading, classroom observations, looking at artworks and immersion in arts-based activities
- be able to illustrate understanding of the child?s artistic and conceptual development, theories of learning and knowledge of pedagogies through the design of sequenced, integrated lessons as delineated in the NSW Creative Arts Syllabus
- have demonstrated competence in the development of learning experiences which illustrate a differentiated curriculum that meets the diverse needs of learners in the Creative Arts
- be able to develop, implement and assess student learning through integrated arts learning experiences across the curriculum with particular reference to literacy
- have an understanding of classroom management and safety issues with arts-based activities.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- Devising and facilitating a sequence of learning experiences, using stage appropriate models of pedagogy, repertoire and assessment - Understanding arts learning by examining the theories of Piaget, Vygotsky, Erikson, Gardner - Understanding and applying the concepts, philosophy and perspectives underpinning the Creative Arts Curriculum which encourage inclusive practices and cultural awareness and sensitivity. - Integrating outcomes from a range of KLAs into combined activities. - Managing practical classroom activities in a safe and appropriate way. - Critical reflection on their own creative work and the work of others through assessment strategies. - Concepts in Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts including making and appreciating, performing, organising sound and listening in a range of contexts - Identifying activities to encourage K-6 students in: *performing, composing and appreciating in dance; *making, performing and appreciating in drama with a focus on improvisation, play-building and scripted drama; *performing, listening and organising sound that provides a continuous sequential development of music; *art-making and appreciating in visual arts practices through the development of skills and ideas.
