EMC414 Curriculum Studies: Vocational Education & Training in Schools (8)

Abstract

This subject is designed to introduce students to teaching vocational education in secondary schools and the nature and purpose of such studies in the broader context of vocational education and training. It also provides students with the opportunity for planning, programming, teaching and assessing in their major specialisation in vocational education and training in the context of the relevant secondary curriculum in their state or territory. It should be noted that the subject in itself does not qualify students to teach VET in scondary schools.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- appreciate the role and organisation of vocational education in the secondary school curriculum;
- be able to discuss contemporary issues in teaching vocational education at the secondary school level;
- be familiar with the relevant curriculum documents for their state or territory in their major specialisation in vocational education;
- have the competencies needed to be an effective teacher of their major specialisation in vocational education;
- be aware of a range of programming and assessment strategies suited to their area of specialisation in vocational education; and
- know how to establish and maintain appropriate links with industry and the community.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
- The place of vocational education in secondary schools. - Teaching vocational education courses in secondary schools. - Contemporary issues in the VET in schools context. - Analysis of syllabus documents and cognate materials. - Teaching vocational education in specialist curriculum areas. - Programming and assessment. - Teaching a diverse range of students.
