EML447 Issues in Contemporary English and Literacy Education (8)

Abstract

In this subject students will learn to identify, critique, and respond to a range of global and local issues relevant to the teaching and learning of English in the Australian context. Students will engage in activities that will develop their understanding of ‘teaching as inquiry’ and their skills as reflexive practitioners. They will learn and apply strategies for inquiring into issues, problems, and questions of interest in contemporary English education. They will learn to construct a high quality academic report which addresses a relevant topic, issue, question or problem.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify, critique, and respond to a range of global and local topics and issues relevant to the teaching and learning of English in the Australian context;
  • should be able to connect topics and issues in English language and literacy education with relevant theories of pedagogy, practice and the processes for teaching and learning English;
  • be able to explain implications of contemporary topics and issues for teaching and learning English in education contexts;
  • understand teaching as inquiry based practice through engagement in a process of inquiry;
  • be able to source and synthesise high quality scholarly literature and relevant materials that support multiple perspectives on topics and issues in English language and literacy education;
  • be able to communicate the outcomes of their inquiry in a coherent and accessible multimodal text.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Identifying, critiquing and responding to global and local topics and issues relevant to English language and literacy education in the Australian context;
  • Teaching as inquiry based practice: action research as professional development;
  • Constructing an academic report;
  • Producing and presenting a dynamic multimodal text.
