This subject considers the central concepts, modes of enquiry and structure of the content of mathematics. Students will explore mathematical concepts with a strong emphasis on numeracy as an enjoyable and relevant way of constructing mathematical meaning and ideas. This subject also introduces students to the use of technological media both as a personal tool for study at a tertiary level and as a medium for learning.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- have evaluated the nature and role of Mathematics in describing and modelling patterns and relationships that can be generalised, and as a means of interpreting the world;
- be able to demonstrate the purposes and functions of mathematics and numeracy in the community;
- demonstrate a broad and critical knowledge and understanding of the mathematics discipline;
- be able to utilise a constructivist approach to mathematics learning;
- be able to employ mathematics as a form of communication and thinking
- be able to interpret and explain mathematical concepts and processes;
- be able to utilise data, including planning, gathering, organizing, applying data to solve problems, and communicating results through the selection of appropriate representations;
- be able to select and use appropriate mathematical thinking and problem-solving techniques in and for a variety of contexts in order to solve problems;
- be able to employ software to critically enhance the learning of mathematics;
- be able to reflect critically on and improve practice;
- be able to explore mathematical discipline concepts through research;
- be able to utilise constructive feedback to improve practice.
Syllabus
The subject will cover the following topics:
-The mathematics discipline. -The nature and role of numeracy and mathematics. -Attitudes to numeracy & mathematics. -Mathematical concepts and processes: *thinking and working mathematically *describing, modelling and generalising patterns and relationships; *choosing and using mathematics: mathematical thinking and problem-solving techniques; *using software, the internet and technology to support mathematics, and *data and statistics based on reporting societal phenomena.
