EMR207 PDHPE Curriculum and Pedagogy (8)

Abstract

In this subject students will learn about and learn to plan for, implement, assess and evaluate HPE in education settings. They will examine pedagogical approaches and models for teaching health and physical education curriculum and participate in learning experiences that focus on how to use a number of these pedagogical approaches to create effective instruction and positive spaces for learning in HPE. Students will employ key documents including the EYLF, Melbourne Dec, HPE Curriculum, HPE Syllabi. They will develop a curriculum unit for movement education and a plan of action for addressing two health priority areas in a primary school setting.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • have completed a journal of reflections that assess and evaluate the various teaching strategies and approaches observed in school settings;
  • have created an action plan linked to one health priority area for a focus school, its students, families, community and other key stakeholders;
  • understand the processes and policies for engaging community groups and organising events;
  • be able to construct a differentiation narrative explaining how factors, such as, human biology, gender, sexuality, culture, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, physical and psycho-social environments and geographical location, influence the health, wellbeing and physical activity patterns of individuals, groups and communities and the process they would go through to create an inclusive learning environment in health and physical education;
  • have constructed a discussion document that critiques and justifies the inclusion of health and physical education as a valuable educational experience in supporting the development of health and well-being of children;
  • be able to present a critique for discussion explaining the various approaches or models recommended in the literature, and justifying their value and purpose for inclusion in Health and Movement Education Curriculum;
  • be able to use professional 'teacher language' to describe the 'application' of the pedagogical approaches and models to practice settings.
