Abstract

This subject introduces students to the different types of flexible delivery available in the adult and vocational education sector, with a particular focus on online delivery. An emphasis is placed on the students developing the skills to use, evaluate and possibly modify flexible delivery resources to suit the needs and specific contexts of learners. Students will focus on the particular pedagogies of flexible and online learning.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe a range of educational technologies and position them within a learning theory framework;
  • be able to display a critical perspective on the potential value of educational technologies;
  • be able to critically evaluate educational technology resources using criteria derived from a range of appropriate learning theories;
  • be able to articulate the broad issues associated with the use of computer technologies in teaching and learning, particularly in terms of inclusivity; and
  • be able to respond to the needs of different types of learners in different flexible delivery contexts.

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • Overview of educational technologies in the adult and vocational learning environment
  • The role of technology in teaching and learning, including multimedia and online resources
  • Location and evaluation of educational multimedia and online resources
  • Flexible delivery options in the adult and vocational learning environment
  • Classroom technologies as tools for collaboration
  • Online learning in the adult and vocational learning environment
  • New technologies and future trends: challenges for teachers
  • Inclusivity in the use of technology in the adult and vocational learning environment
  • Ethical issues in the use of technology in the adult and vocational learning environment
