ENG399 Engineering Cornerstone Thesis (24)

The Cadet Engineer will solve a current problem/issue relevant to industry and report results in a thesis. Cadets must apply their theoretical and technical knowledge gained elsewhere in the curriculum to the solution of the project, and must deliver the results in a timely and professional manner.  Students must also communicate their process and outcomes effectively both to fellow engineers and the general public.  One Academic Mentor (from CSU Engineering) and a Professional Mentor (from the relevant industry) will be assigned for each project.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • demonstrate the ability to comprehensively and accurately define complex and nebulous engineering problems in an industry context;
  • demonstrate the capacity to independently apply existing engineering knowledge to the solution of complex problems;
  • communicate effectively their problem definition, design processes and outcomes to both technical and non-technical audiences, both synchronously and asynchronously; and
  • use project management tools to assist in timely completion of milestones; and
  • demonstrate in-depth knowledge of a specialised area within the discipline; and
  • demonstrate the capacity to formulate an appropriate method for investigating a specific complex Civil Engineering problem; and
  • demonstrate the capacity to analyse raw data, draw appropriate conclusions and present those conclusions in context, with due consideration of methods and assumptions involved; and
  • demonstrate the capacity to document and report the work in a format appropriate for academic literature.
Syllabus
The subject will cover the following topics:
  • An individual technical project appropriate to prerequisite studies completed by the student engineer and limited to the engineering discipline.
Workplace Learning
This subject contains a 365 days Compulsory Workplace Learning component.

The thesis work will be completed during students’ work placement, where they are working in industry as Cadet Engineers. The work placement occurs over a period of approximately a year, and includes paid work, workplace learning, as well as study time for other subjects.  While on placement, students will be supported by an academic mentor from CSU and an industry mentor from their host organisation.  It is anticipated that students will spend an average of an hour and a half per day on thesis activities while on placement.

Residential School
This subject contains a 5 day Compulsory Residential School.

The residential school for this subject runs concurrently with that of ENG380.  Core events include: the conduct of the in-person elements of the dissemination of the thesis; participation in whole-of-course exhibitions of portfolio / thesis work.

 

Special Resources

This subject will be completed while the student is on placement in industry.  Industry placements may require travel and/or relocation depending upon the nature and location of the placement.
