EPI307 Timber Technology: Workshop & Pedagogy (8)

This subject builds on skills developed in EPI104 in particular, and provides students with the opportunity to develop more advanced workshop knowledge, skills and safety procedures. These relate to more complex equipment, techniques and processes used with timber in the secondary school context, particularly those in Stage 6. An emphasis on pedagogical approaches and workshop teaching strategies appropriate to Industrial Technology Timber, with a focus on assessment for learning, is also an important part of the subject.

Students will engage in school timber workshop projects and receive advice and demonstration of teachers' practice including issues related to Work Health and Safety (WHS) and classroom management. They will discuss and demonstrate an applied understanding of syllabus specified requisite knowledge and skills for Stage 6/Year 11-12 Industrial Technology, and how these may be taught in the classroom and/or workshop.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to competently use power tools and equipment in a timber based workshop;
  • be able to explain and demonstrate Senior Industrial Technology Timber techniques and processes;
  • be able to discuss, develop and put into practice WHS procedures in a timber workshop;
  • be able to discuss teaching timber technology knowledge and skills; and
  • be able to plan teaching of timber technology knowledge and skills using a range of appropriate strategies, including assessment for learning.

Residential School
This subject contains a 4 day Compulsory Residential School.

The residential school is designed to enable students to further develop and demonstrate their ability to safely use a range of timber working tools and equipment through the completion of practical projects.

Special Resources

The University does not provide specialised resources, instead we use specialised resources in secondary schools in the form of tools, equipment and workshops. Students are expected to contribute towards consumables for projects they create and keep.
