ETL503 Resourcing the Curriculum (8)

Abstract

This subject focuses on the critical evaluation and provision of appropriate digital and hardcopy resources to effectively resource the curriculum and support learning and teaching within the school. The role of school library collections in the information environment is particularly addressed. Assessment of needs, selection, acquisition, de-selection, collection evaluation and collection policy formulation are examined in the context of the school. Issues such as budgeting, censorship, cooperative resource provision and learning management systems are explored.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be aware of the role of school library collections in learning and teaching;
  • be able to assess information needs in the context of building school library collections and services;
  • be able to provide an overview of the range of information resources available and the impact of digital resources on school library collections;
  • be able to identify and evaluate information sources and products to determine their relevance to the information needs of the school community;
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of how to select, acquire and deselect collections and resources to respond to curriculum resources needs in a timely manner;
  • be able to discuss key issues such as censorship, budgeting and cooperative resource provision;
  • be able to lead in the development of a collection management policy; and
  • be able to build library and information services that respond to the full range of digital environments.

Syllabus

The subject will cover the following topics:
  • The nature of collections in the context of learning and teaching in 21st century environments
  • Critical evaluation of print and digital resources
  • Ethical and legal aspects of information management and information distribution
  • Forecast, plan, facilitate and evaluate appropriate resource management including selection, acquisition, budgeting, censorship, deselection and collection evaluation
  • Collection management policy
  • The future of school library collections
