HCS321 Welfare Practice with Children, Young People and their Carers (8)
This subject develops students' knowledge and skills for working with children, young people and their carers in adverse life circumstances. Adversity can have a deleterious impact upon wellbeing in terms of education, health, safety and justice. The subject enables students to integrate knowledge of psycho-emotional and social development of children within family and other care arrangements, with social work practice skills that enhance effective professional engagement and intervention.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a sound knowledge of children and young people's social, emotional and psychological development within cultural and other appropriate frames of reference such as family and community
  • be able to articulate the likely impact of various forms of disadvantage and adversity experienced by children, young people and their carers upon children and young people's development and the reasons for this
  • be able to identify the practical needs of children, young people and their carers living in adverse situations, to promote resilience, or to rehabilitate developmental progression
  • be able to demonstrate a range of effective techniques for talking with and influencing children, young people and their carers, in respect of addressing their needs and circumstances to promote resilience and/or rehabilitation
  • be able to demonstrate a range of effective community development interventions to promote children and young people's equity and access to services and support in the wider community
Syllabus
The subject will cover the following topics:
- The ways in which children and young people develop - Adverse environments and experiences that impact upon children and young people's development - Promoting children and young people's resilience and recovery from adverse experiences - Working with and for children and young people in their families and communities
