HSM371 Issues in Health Services Management (8)
This is a "capstone" subject for the Operational Management strand of the undergraduate health services management degree program. In it, students will be expected to demonstrate a mastery of the analytical skills and the conceptual frameworks developed throughout the Bachelor of Health Services Management (Operational) course, with due consideration being given to a range of contemporary issues confronting practising health services managers.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to:
  • identify and evaluate a variety of issues impacting on health service organisations that could be considered "current";
  • critically appraise each issue where appropriate in terms of its implications for management functions such as planning and resources management as they are performed by line/operational managers in health service organisations;
  • demonstrate a synthesis of the principal topics of subjects previously studied in the Operational Management strand of the Bachelor of Health Services Management program;
  • demonstrate by way of the project proposal, or a project or policy impact analysis which is submitted for assessment, an awareness of current issues in both the health care industry and the external environment which have an impact on the nature of business and the organisation of their health service organisation.
Syllabus
The subject will cover the following topics:
- the subject has only one module which contains a set of twelve "trigger" readings with a brief commentary as a means of assisting students to recall relevant aspects of the material already studied over the last few years and to provide some cues on some current issues, including ethical issues implicated in health care decisions and policies. The textbooks and course materials used by students in subjects studied throughout the BHSM program form part of the literature resources for this subject.
