They will explore various approaches to performance improvement in health service organisations, eg. process evaluation, outcome evaluation, quality management, action research, and health service research. Students explore contextual issues that impact on service evaluation, drawing on their knowledge of organisations and management practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to discuss various approaches to performance improvement in health service organisations, eg. process evaluation, outcome evaluation, quality management, action research, and health service research;
  • be able to discuss evaluation as a function of management;
  • be able to develop an evaluation plan for an aspect of service delivery;
  • be able to justify the focus of the evaluation and the selection of evaluation strategies and tools;
  • be able to analyse the context of the evaluation drawing on knowledge of health service organisations and management practice gained from prior learning;
  • be able to reflect on personal capacity for undertaking furture enquiry within the management role.
