INF329 Leadership in Library Services to Children and Young Adults (8)

Students will be introduced to the central principles, professional standards and contexts underpinning library services for children and young adults. They will examine the community context of library services for children and young adults and develop strategies for informing practice. Students will learn about strategies for maximising opportunities and environments for children and young adults to enhance access and engagement. Students will be introduced to basic processes for the management of library services for children and young adults and will explore policy development, data gathering funding and advocacy. They will explore relevant legal and ethical guidelines for working with children and young adults and become familiar with relevant procedures and policies.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to describe the context, foundational assumptions and central principles and philosophies underpinning the provision of library services to children and young adults;
  • be able to discuss and use resources and organisations relating to diverse communities to inform the design of information services for children and young adults;
  • be able to identify and analyse important design elements to enable access and engagement with information services and resources for children and young adults;
  • be able to identify and apply legislation and other relevant government and community requirements and expectations relating to information services for children and young adults; and
  • be able to employ administrative processes and considerations to information services for children and young adults.

  • Introduction to the historical and philosophical background to the provision of children and youth services
  • Principles underpinning provision of services to children and youth
  • Introduction and overview of the concepts of community and diversity and its implications for service provision to children and youth
  • Global concerns and responsibilities
  • Policy development for children and young adults in public library settings
  • Creating innovative, sustainable and engaging environments
