INF332 Community Outreach (8)

This subject will explore the concepts of community and diversity (including age, socio-economic, mental and physical health, rural and remote communities, linguistic and cultural diversity) in the context of providing localised information-related community outreach services to diverse populations. Students are encouraged to explore diversity-related issues from within a framework of equity and social justice. Students will choose to explore these ideas from the perspective of a range of professional information settings (such as public libraries, academic libraries, specialised information agencies).

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to explain the concepts of community and diversity;
  • be able to articulate the community outreach roles of a range of information organisation types;
  • be able to reflect on the relationship between information services, and equity and social justice issues;
  • be able to explore and describe the sociocultural makeup of a community;
  • be able to develop knowledge of effective cross-cultural communication methods to support collaboration with diverse populations; and
  • be able to design an information related community outreach plan to meet the needs of a community group.
