ITC542 Networking Fundamentals (8)

This subject provides students with an introduction to contemporary computer networking concepts and instils the skills and knowledge required to design, configure and manage a small to medium sized network. Students will gain knowledge about the layered architectural design principles along with the technical standards required for establishing connectivity through such networks. The subject will introduce students to the current and emerging concepts in IP addressing, IP routing and switching to develop the skills required to design, implement and troubleshoot computer networks.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to interpret the architectural design principles of internetworking;
  • be able to analyse IP addressing requirements and design an addressing scheme;
  • be able to analyse the requirements of IP routing and choose appropriate routing methods;
  • be able to demonstrate how internetworking devices obtain their network configuration;
  • be able to explain how data flows through the internet;
  • be able to ascertain and evaluate selection of applications and protocols for transferring data across the internet; and
  • be able to discuss the evolution and ongoing change of the internet.
