This subject's activities and assessments emphasise cross-platform journalism, which includes text, photos, video, audio and social media news generation and production. Students learn about social media news gathering and dissemination, and participate in a news gathering simulation. Platforms for student work include an audience-focused website and social media platforms, and radio outlets for local news. Students assemble, curate and distribute content and take responsibility for engaging audiences on web and social platforms.

  • Roles of editors, producers, and subeditors in program/publication production
  • Role and function of editorial meetings
  • Story selection, hierarchy and placement in television and radio bulletins and programs/print and online publications

  • Editorial judgement
  • Social media and web distribution and analytics
  • Media law: courts, hate laws, defamation

Special Resources

This subject requires access to specialist recording equipment and studio facilities. On campus students can access these facilities in the School of Communication and Creative Industries authentic learning spaces. Distance students will either need to work remotely into the campus newsroom or access the equipment through a proximate community or commercial radio station or purchase suitable equipment for their home.
