This subject will enable students to understand the investigative, content and structural expectations of journalism created in 'non-news' forms. Through creation of longform, feature, documentary and/or narrative journalism, students will develop skills to make in-depth, engaging, story-driven reportage for contemporary audiences.

Assumed Knowledge

This subject assumes students have completed basic journalism skills subjects such as JRN112 and JRN102. 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify and explain the differences between news journalism and longform;
  • be able to analyse and evaluate examples of longform journalism;
  • be able to apply project planning principles to a work of longform journalism; and
  • be able to apply principles of storytelling, visualisation and structure in the creation of longform journalism.

  • Principles of narrative and storytelling applicable to feature, documentary, current affairs journalism

  • Drafting, editing and proofreading
