This subject studies recent developments in the Asia-Pacific region and their implications for international business. A thematic approach is used to analyse economic systems, political systems and business culture in the region. Physical geography and natural resource endowments are discussed. Case studies provide detailed analysis of issues and problems in a number of countries. Australia's changing role in the region is assessed.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to identify and interpret key economic and social trends in the Asia-Pacific region;
  • be able to discuss the importance of business culture in conducting international business;
  • be able to explain the ethical dimensions of conducting business in the Asia-Pacific region;
  • be able to assess alternative strategies for managing political risk;
  • be able to assess the current roles of the major political associations and trading groups operating in the region; and
  • be able to analyse the economic and political roles of Australia in the region.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • An overview of the geo-politics of the Asia-Pacific region
  • A comparative analysis of economic systems in the region, with reference to market economies, command economies and mixed economies
  • Political systems and their implications for international business
  • Business culture: Doing business in the Asia-Pacific region
  • The economic and political evolution of the region's dominant countries since the end of World War 2
  • Economic and political co-operation in the region and institutions which foster and manage this co-operation
