OCC103 Communication for Health Practice (8)

This subject will facilitate development of respectful and effective communication skills for practice. Students will learn communication skills required to work effectively in a range of health, community, social, and educational practice settings including interviewing skills, professional writing, interacting with a range of people from diverse backgrounds and situations, and people who may have communication difficulties. This subject will address communication skills relevant to working with people across the lifespan, people who use alternative strategies to communicate and Indigenous Australian peoples. Students will have the opportunity to identify strengths and areas for development in their communication skills, and will develop goals and strategies to continue developing their communication skills. This subject will assist students to further develop their academic, digital, information and research literacies.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate appropriate communication skills and professional behaviour required for a range of health, community, social and education practice contexts;
  • be able to describe and demonstrate a range of verbal and non-verbal communication skills relevant to practice;
  • be able to describe the link between effective communication and health and wellbeing outcomes;
  • be able to identify areas of personal strength and areas for development in their communication skills and develop realistic strategies to continue to improve their communication skills;
  • be able to identify and implement techniques used in communicating with a broad range of people across the lifespan with a particular focus on respectful communication skills relevant to working with Indigenous Australian people;
  • be able to identify strategies for communicating with people who use alternative forms of communication; and
  • be able to explain strategies for effectively working with interpreters when working with people who require interpreting services.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Communicating as a health professional and working effectively in teams;
  • Person-centred and reflective practice;
  • Confidentiality, privacy and consent;
  • Attending behaviours and active listening;
  • Interviewing skills;
  • Report writing;
  • Communicating with a broad range of people who have diverse communication abilities;
  • Exploring communication with Indigenous Australian peoples; and
  • Communicating with non-English speaking people and the use of interpreters.
