OCC205 Enabling Strategies: Facilitating Therapeutic Groups (8)

This subject extends the students' knowledge of occupational therapy, and the social science subjects already studied, to enable students to gain the skills to design and run a group therapy program.

This subject introduces occupation based therapeutic groups and how to facilitate effective groups by applying knowledge of group dynamics, effective design principles of the group structure and the use of intentional therapeutic communication strategies.

Knowledge of and skills in professional decision-making and critical thinking as applied to various client-based scenarios; understanding of and ability to apply key theoretical models, research and theories related to occupational therapy practice; understanding of person-centred practice.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to design an occupational "goal based" group therapy program through applying knowledge of group dynamics and psychosocial health and wellness issues;
  • be able to apply intentional therapeutic communication strategies to facilitate effective group cohesion and enable therapeutic outcomes;
  • be able to facilitate an occupation based group by applying knowledge of group dynamics that has been developed through the practice, observation and self-reflection of group experiences during this subject; and
  • be able to apply professional reasoning to justify the group therapy program design and group facilitation strategies used.

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Importance of occupation based group therapy;
  • Group Theory including dynamics & social groups;
  • Occupation based group theory frameworks;
  • Designing an occupation based group program & protocol;
  • Implementing an occupation based group program & protocol;
  • Group work facilitation skills; and
  • Intentional communication skills.
