Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a grasp of basic philosophical techniques of analysis and argument;
  • be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of the practice of addressing philosophical and ethical problems; and
  • be able to apply their skills of analysis and argument and their understanding of theories to the clarification and resolution of the particular philosophical and ethical problems/issues addressed in the Syllabus.

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • Applications: Philosophical analysis of a number of philosophical and ethical problems. Examples include: how we could know whether or not God exists, whether we should believe scientific theories, what is an ideal political state to live in from philosophical and ethical points of view, how we might try to resolve ethical dilemmas, and whether we can know that the world around us exists
  • Philosophical Theory: The analysis and evaluation of philosophical arguments concerning the problems addressed
