This subject covers the production and management of annual crops in agriculture. Agronomic principles are taught within the context of annual winter and summer crops. Marketing, financial management and alternative production methods are also covered to provide a wide exposure to this important part of Australian agriculture.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to determine business and production goals for annual crop enterprises;
  • be able to plan a cropping system for a dryland and irrigated annual crop production;
  • be able to manage and evaluate the performance of annual crops;
  • be able to describe the growth cycle for a range of annual crops;
  • be able to identify the agronomic requirements for a winter and a summer crop;
  • be able to outline the specialised technology or management interventions necessary for the production, processing and/or distribution of selected annual crops or their by-products; and
  • be able to determine market requirements for selected annual crops or their by-products.

  • Weed management;
  • Planting strategies;
  • Winter crops;
  • Summer crops;

  • Alternative production methods and current issues.

Residential School

This subject contains a 2 day Compulsory Residential School.

Students experience the following activities which cannot be done remotely:

  • Crop rotations and programs;
  • Crop growth cycles;
  • Crop morphology and identification;
  • Plant growth and development;
  • Field crop nutrition and irrigation; and
  • Farm visits to discuss crop management.
