PSY423 Industrial / Organisational Psychology (8)

This subject emphasises the application of the principles of psychology to industrial and organisational settings. Industrial/Organisational (I/O) Psychology is concerned with behaviour in work situations and the scientific study of the relationship between humans and the world of work. Topics include major fields in I/O Psychology: Personnel, Organisational Behaviour, Human Engineering, Vocational and Career Counselling, Organisation Development and Industrial Relations. Particular focus will be on intra-individual variables such as job satisfaction and work motivation; prediction and measurement systems for employee selection and performance appraisal; and special stimulus variables like training and development, environmental conditions and information processing.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to demonstrate a general framework of understanding the three major fields of Industrial and Organisational Psychology: Personnel, Organisational and Human Factors
  • be able to demonstrate an understanding of the basic aspects of Personnel Psychology: job analysis; psychological employment assessment; recruitment selection; training and development; and performance appraisal
  • be able to explain the key aspects of Organisational Psychology: work teams; organisational attitudes and behaviour; stress and well being at work; work motivation; and leadership
  • be able to describe the foundations of Human Factor Psychology: job design; union / management relations; ergonomics and work conditions

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:

* The subject considers the individual/organisation relationship from two perspectives: the psychology of the individual worker and the social psychology of organisations.
The former will include topics such as:
* Job analysis
* Selection
* Training
* Goal setting and performance appraisal
* Stress
* Psychological analysis of employment, work and unemployment.
The latter will include topics such as:
* Theories of organisations
* Communication patterns
* Motivation
* Morale
* Individuals and groups
* Leadership
* Organisational development
