SPH534 Cultural Competency and Community Development as Speech Pathology Practice (8)

In this subject, students engage with the history and current realities of Indigenous Australian peoples and critically reflect on the influence this has on the accessibility and appropriateness of speech pathology services. Students further develop their reflective practice skills by exploring their own values and beliefs, and critiquing speech pathology practices when working with linguistically and culturally diverse populations. This subject has a specific focus on Indigenous Australian peoples, languages and cultures. The role of language and cultural maintenance in health and wellbeing is explored. Students develop their knowledge of Indigenous Australian languages and their skills in linguistic analysis, to facilitate their provision of culturally responsive speech pathology services. This subject is taught collaboratively by the School of Indigenous Australian Studies and the School of Community Health.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:
  • be able to apply standpoint theory to critically reflect on social, cultural and historical dimensions of knowledge, values, and experiences and the impact of these on cultural competence development;
  • be able to critically analyse the socio-historical context including individual and institutional racism embedded within Australia's health and education systems, including speech pathology;
  • be able to apply Indigenous research principles and methodologies to the evaluation of knowledge, policy and professional practice;
  • be able to describe Indigenous Australian relationships with language and the role of language maintenance in health and wellbeing;
  • be able to apply skills and knowledge of cross cultural communication and linguistic analysis to facilitate linguistically and culturally responsive speech pathology assessment and intervention practices; and
  • be able to reflect on learning across the subject to create personal and professional learning goals and strategies for achieving those goals.

  • Indigenous Standpoint;
  • Indigenous Australian cultures, histories and professional practice;
  • Language and Indigenous Australians; and
  • Language, linguistics and culture in speech pathology practice.
