SWK703 Social Work Literature Review (16)

This subject enables candidates to undertake a literature review relevant to their research project. Candidates will refine their literature-search, review and reporting skills. The subject requires candidates to be thoroughly conversant with the literature relevant to their research topic and to understand/identify the ontological, axiological, methodological and epistemological context of their topic. Skills of critical review, analysis and synthesis are developed. Candidates, in consultation with the supervisory team, are required to complete a draft literature review as preparation for their proposed research project.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to identify gaps in the literature and articulate a rationale for the research topic
  • be able to demonstrate effective search strategies to systematically locate literature relevant to the research topic
  • be able to demonstrate high level critical analysis and synthesis of literature with reference to the research topic
  • be able to critique extant literature with reference to ontology, axiology, epistemology and methodology
  • be able to write a draft literature review which includes an account of methodology and search strategies, and a critical exploration of the issues
  • be able to critically reflect on the research process and progress to-date, in consultation with the supervisory team

Syllabus

This subject will cover the following topics:
  • The importance, purposes and characteristics of the literature review process in research
  • Effective search strategies to systematically locate relevant literature
  • Critical analysis and synthesis of literature with reference to the research topic
  • Ontology, axiology, epistemology and methodology in relation to the literature review
  • Reporting skills - writing-up a draft literature review
  • The research process and progress to-date - consulting with the supervisory team and planning ahead
