This subject provides the theoretical and practice skills necessary for students to undertake a counselling role. It covers skills, and strategies compatible with counselling frameworks and theories. It deals with specific techniques relevant to working with diverse individuals and groups in the human services field. In addition it will outline the importance of boundaries and self-care when engaging in the professional helping relationships.

Upon successful completion of this subject, students should:

  • be able to reflect on their own practice and develop strategies to enhance counselling skills; and
  • to have an awareness of diversity i.e. culture and its impact on the helping relationship.
