Research at CSU

Charles Sturt University (CSU) is committed to excellence in research, and to identifying and supporting areas and projects that allow the University to undertake internationally competitive research and research training.

The University invests its resources in selected areas of proven and potential strength significant to the University's mission. CSU focuses its research effort in those areas where it has particular depth and strength of academic and research capability to offer high quality research and training opportunities to its staff, students and communities, including partners in industry, the professions and communities of inland Australia.

In line with its commitment to supporting collaborative, interdisciplinary research, the University has established eight research centres: three Centres of Research Excellence, four Strategic Research Centres and one Affiliated Research Centre.

Support for Research Students

CSU is committed to facilitating a positive learning environment for research students and focuses its energies towards Research Higher Degree (RHD) student completions through a combination of workshops, mentor support, quality supervision and opportunities to link with other research centres.

Fields of research

The University's research ranges from cardiovascular, plant bio-security, farming systems, enhanced social and environmental sustainability, and irrigation to contextual theology, artificial intelligence and spatial modelling techniques, improving agricultural productivity through molecular biology, and environment and sustainable viticulture. Portfolios of research and consulting amount to approximately AUD$10 million annually.

Admission requirements

For admission to postgraduate research programs, you will be required to hold a recognised Bachelor degree equivalent to an Australian Bachelor degree. Your academic performance at the Bachelor level will be assessed as part of the admissions process. Applicants are also required to submit a 300-word research proposal outlining the intended area of research.

How to apply

Applications for admission to a Research Higher Degree need to be completed and forwarded together with all necessary documentation (e.g. transcripts of previous study and a 300 word research outline) to CSU Admissions. With no nominated closing date, applications can be lodged at any time for the PhD and Master by research programs and research professional Doctorates.
