What to expect

what to expectAs your home away from home, what can you expect from on campus accommodation?

The actual facilities of our on campus accommodation differ based on the residences. Some are more like traditional university dormitory living, and others are designed to be more home-like, but you can expect the basics to be the same across all campuses.

Bedrooms

  • All bedrooms are fully furnished, including a bed, desk, cupboards, drawers, shelves and a chair.
  • Bed linen and pillows are also provided, with a linen exchange on a weekly basis. You may bring your own linen and launder it yourself if you prefer.
  • Rooms in self-catered accommodation contain a bar-sized refrigerator.
  • A private telephone and a data point are provided in all bedrooms.

No additional furniture is permitted, but you may bring a portable sound system if you wish. We strongly recommend that you also bring headphones.

Can I leave my things in my room during session break?

All rooms on all campuses have a lockable cupboard where you will be able to lock up your belongs while on session break.

Bathrooms

Shared bathrooms and toilets are located close to bedrooms in all residences.

Kitchens

Self-catered residences have kitchens fitted with separate cupboard space for each resident, either an oven, microwave, or a convection/ microwave oven is standard. You will need to bring your own crockery, cutlery, cooking utensils, pots/pans, tea towels and washing up items.

Catered residences have kitchenettes with kettle, toaster, fridge and microwave. Meals can be purchased using "Meal Credits" and are available from various outlets on campus.

Semi-catered allows a self catered residence but provides the flexibility to use a number of meal tickets at any participating meal outlet.

Cleaning

All common rooms, kitchens and bathrooms are cleaned regularly. Bedrooms and common rooms must be kept tidy to enable cleaning staff to do their jobs effectively. You will need to make your bed, remove rubbish, keep your refrigerator clean, and wash and put away your cooking and eating utensils after use.

Common rooms

Common rooms are provided with lounge chairs and televisions. Some are connected to pay-TV.

Laundry

LaundryWashing machines, dryers and clotheslines are available in every residence. All machines are operated using your student ID card and the cost of these machines is covered by the Washing Machine Levy that you pay upon application. Most machines are front-loaders and front-loader washing powder is recommended for all machines.

Security

While the on campus accommodation is certainly not run like a school dormitory, every effort is made to provide a safe environment in which students can work and live in comfort and security.

A security service operates on all campuses, except Dubbo, to ensure the safety of students, staff and property. They will also assist if you lock yourself out of your room late at night.

Support staff

Your Residential Advisor (RA) is a second, third or fourth year student leader who is responsible for a group of students.

Head Residents are responsible for the support and supervision of a group of RAs.

The Manager, Residential Operations is a full-time member of the University staff who manages the provision of pastoral care to the Halls of Residence community.

Residential Operations Officers assist Managers in the management of residential support and operations.
