Year 10 is an important year as it's a time to consider life beyond high school. Start thinking about career options that appeal to you, and whether you'll need to apply to do a course at university.
What are my career options?
- What is your favourite subject at school? It is worthwhile to research the career options linked to the subjects you enjoy studying.
- Find out suitable careers
- Research the job advertisements in the newspapers and on internet jobsearch sites to see which careers appeal to you.
- Chat to your parents, parents' friends and Career Advisers about careers.
- Make a list of those careers that appeal to you.
- Discover if there are any similarities on the list. For example does your chosen career options relate to Arts, Business, Communication, Education, Health or Science fields?
What do you like doing?
Think about your hobbies and things you enjoy doing. It will be rewarding if you are able to find a career incorporating the things you love to do into your everyday work life.?? Overall, job satisfaction is the key to a happy working life.

Should I study at University?
If you're wondering whether you should go on to university study, here are some good sources of advice:
- talk to your school's Career Adviser about study options and what you might be suited to
- talk with your parents and get their opinion on study and the workforce
- talk with people in the industry you are interested in to get current advice
- read industry magazines to see what's happening and future opportunities
- take a tour of a CSU campus and talk with current students about what it's like to study at uni, the lifestyle and the expectations
- try to get some work experience in the different areas you are interested in

Work experience
Work experience allows you to participate in the day-to-day activities of a profession that interests you. It is the perfect way to get a taste of a particular career area before you commit to studying it at university. The key to making the most of work experience opportunities is to work in different industries so you can compare career areas and find out which one best suits your interests.
Work experience is a great way to be a step above the rest when applying for courses that have a high intake, require you to submit a portfolio or attend an interview because it demonstrates your enthusiasm and commitment to that area of study.
