More on learning and teaching

Assessment relevant to your course

Depending on the subject you are studying, your assessment requirements will vary. Assessment of your learning is usually based on essays and exams, but may also be made up of laboratory or studio workshops, assignments, presentations and forum participation, as well as practical assessments in, fieldwork activities or work placements, allowing for an overall assessment.

Exams

Exams take many formats depending on the field of study, but may include short answer, multiple choice and essay form, among others. Prior exam papers are available online through the library for many subjects.

Your subject outline guide will advise whether there is a final exam in your subject and what format it will take. Exams are usually held in the final two weeks of each session. Around mid session, the Examination Office will send you details of the time and place in which your exams will be held.

Assignments

Assignments may take various forms such as preparing an essay, report, or case study or participating in a group project or oral presentation. For resources or help with assignments, visit the Learning Skills website, and ensure you make full use of the library catalogue and databases to find information for your assignments. You should also contact your lecturer if you have any difficulties with the interpretation of an assignment or the academic content it requires.

The requirements for each assessment are specified in the assessment section of your subject outline guide. This section usually includes details such as the type of assessment, due date, and the percentage each assessment contributes to your overall grade. You may also find marking criteria, which provides guidance on what your lecturer is looking for and the basis on which your work is marked.

Referencing is an important part of any assignment. It is essential to demonstrate that you can maintain academic integrity in your writing and avoid any incidences of plagiarism. Check your subject outline guide for the referencing style that is required and for help with referencing, check the CSU Learning Skills website.

Assignments should be typed and presented in a professional manner and submitted according to the requirements in your subject outline guide. For on campus students, assignments are generally submitted by hand to the special assignment boxes which are cleared each weekday at 5pm.
