Access Conditions

The Regional Archives is open to members of the public, however, those researchers wishing to use any part of the Collection should note that there are certain conditions surrounding the accessibility of records.

State archives are normally available for public access 30 years after the date of the final transaction. In some cases, access conditions relating to State archives are much stricter (e.g. police records are closed for 100 years). Before accessing State archives, researchers need to produce a current State Records reader's ticket. Tickets may be issued to anyone over the age of 15 years, provided that they have two forms of identification.

Access conditions also vary with records from the 'Regional' and 'University' collections. Some depositors have not imposed access conditions at all, whereas others require written permission from the depositor before an item can be retrieved. It is important to contact the Regional Archives about access conditions before making arrangements to visit.
