Newspapers on Microfilm

We are excited to announce that we have recently acquired a substantial collection of newspapers on microfilm. The CSU Wagga Campus Library has generously transferred many of their newspaper holdings to the Archives, with the hope that they will now be more accessible to the public.

The majority of the publications are of regional significance, such as the Tumut and Adelong Times, The Pastoral Review and The Border Post. We were also able to secure a number of very early Sydney and Melbourne papers including, The Sydney Gazette (1803-1842), The Town and Country Journal, Port Phillip Gazette and Port Phillip Patriot.

The CSU Wagga Campus Library has retained their major holdings of The Daily Advertiser, and the metropolitan dailies e.g. Sydney Morning Herald, Telegraph and The Age.

A full listing of the Archives holdings of Newspapers on Microfilm is now available!

Archives Outside Blog

State Records have developed a website to create a meeting place for people who have archival collections around New South Wales and researchers who wish to access them. While the main focus is on the State Records Regional Repository Network, participation from all keepers of archives, from Archivists, Local Studies Librarians and Records Managers to members of Community Groups and Personal Collectors will be most welcome.

The two main objectives of the Archives Outside Blog is to promote the content of archival collections in New South Wales, and to provide information on topics and resources relating to the care and management of archives.

Images on Flickr

Recently we decided to collaborate with Flickr to showcase many of the great images that we hold in our collection.

As one of the great strengths to the collection, we are looking to progressively digitise many of our photographic images and make them more readily available online.

Flickr enables us to group images into categories such as Sport, Schools, People, and Buildings which allows for browsing and simple navigation.

Feel free to check out our Photostream on Flickr!

'One way, my way.' Tom Lennon Collection (RW1574/111/592)

The Life and Work of Thomas T. Lennon

If you missed the exhibition of The Life and Work of Tom Lennon at the start of the year, don't worry! It can now be seen at the Botanic Gardens Site of the Museum of the Riverina.

The exhibition is a snapshot of a vast collection of striking visual fragments of the social and cultural history of the 1950's and 1960's. Catalogues are available from the Museum of the Riverina and the CSU Regional Archives Search Room.

Tom Lennon, in his capacity as photographer for The Daily Advertiser during the 1950's and 60's, amassed a huge collection of photographs and negatives. The official count of surviving images stands at 80,000 negatives and 50,000 prints. This wonderful visual record of our region's cultural history has been indexed (some by subject, others by date) and can be viewed in our Search Room.

As a small point of interest, it was discovered late last year that the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney also has an extensive collection of Tom's work, from his time as a commercial photographer in Drummoyne in the 1930's and 40's. Part of this collection can be viewed on Flickr.

Wagga's History on the Web (as a Wiki!)

The Wagga Wagga City Library has recently launched a new wiki devoted to the history of Wagga.

A wiki is a collaborative website that relies on a community of users to contribute to and edit the online material. Wikis have the great advantage of belonging to the whole community - anyone and everyone can share their stories, photos and memories.

It's free to browse this fascinating community resource, as well as make contributions of your own.

Just go to Wagga Wagga Local History, and have a look around at the stories and photographs. Sign up and you'll be able to leave comments, start a discussion or add your own photos, videos or memories.
