CSU > Cardiovascular Research Group

Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Australia and around the world. Around 3.67 million Australians are affected by cardiovascular disease and one-third of the affected are disabled long term. The prevalence of heart, stroke and vascular conditions in Australia has increased by more than 18% over the last decade. Over 90% of Australian adults have one or more modifiable risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Development of new strategies in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease is a national research priority.

The Cardiovascular Research Group is a university-designated research unit, comprising staff members from five academic schools on three university campuses, and several physician or nursing investigators from Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. The members of the group are also working collaboratively with researchers from several other major Australian and overseas universities or hospitals on a range of projects from the diagnosis to treatment for heart failure, coronary heart disease, cardiac arrhythmias and cardiovascular risk factors.

Members of the group have adopted a trans-disciplinary approach to conceptualise, design and conduct high quality research projects. Within the group there is a wide range of expertise in cardiovascular medicine, clinical pharmacology and pharmacy, biomedical science, mental health, nuclear medicine and cardiac rehabilitation. The extensive research and clinical skills within the group enable the studies of major cardiovascular diseases from both biomedical and clinical perspectives.
