The University leads an ARC Special Research Centre in the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics (CAPPE) in partnership with University of Melbourne and the Australian National University . This Centre has been recognised by the University as a Designated Centre of Research Excellence. The purpose of CAPPE is to conduct path-breaking research, provide policy input and promote community discussion and professional dialogue in relation to critical issues within the public and political domain.

The Centre's research is organised around six integrated research areas, each of which has one or more 'core' projects: Criminal Justice Ethics: Police Corruption (core), Ethics of Drugs – Using and Dealing (core). Business and Professional Ethics: Ethics of Human Resource Management (core), Codes of Ethics for the Professions (core). Ethical Issues in Biotechnology: Ethics in Cloning (core), Plant Intellectualy Property (core). IT and Nanotechnology: Ethics in Emergent Technology: Ethics in Nanotechnology Research (core), Digital Divide in Australia (core). Ethical Issues in Political Violence and State Sovereignty: Morality of "dirty hands" as an issue in political leadership (core), Ethics of Humanitarian Armed Intervention (core). Welfare Ethics: Rights of the Child (core), Ethical Dilemma in the Provision of Pastoral Care by Religious Organisations (core).
