the International Rural Sociology
Association. Hotel Gloria, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 30 July to
5 August 2000.
Theme: Sustainable Rural Livelihoods:

* Protecting Resources
* Fostering Human Development
Attended by 1,547 delegates from 72 countries.
As Program Chair I was responsible for developing the theme, selection
of plenary, symposium and workshop topics and coordinators (over
120 people), and I was responsible for the selection of plenary
speakers (8 in total).
I also had a major role in general management and promotion of the
conference. The conference was a great success.

- Elected President of the International
Rural Sociology Association (IRSA) 2000-2004.
- Awarded the inaugural research
excellence award for the Faculty of Arts by Charles Sturt University
in 1996.
- Designated as a University
Key Researcher for 1999 to 2000 and provided with discretionary
funding ($20,000) to enable me to take a leading research role in Charles
Sturt University.
- As Publications Chair, International
Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA), in 1997 I successfully
commercialised the Association’s journal, Impact Assessment,
and negotiated its merger with the journal, Project
Appraisal, to form a new journal, Impact
Assessment and Project Appraisal.
- As a Director of IAIA, successfully
chaired a Constitutional revision process, and a committee restructuring
process that led to major reform in the structure and functioning of
IAIA (1998-2000).
- Commissioned to write a briefing paper on social impact assessment
(SIA) for the World Commission on Dams.
Have also had other international consulting experience on SIA in The
Netherlands, Portugal and Australia.
- Selected by Charles Sturt University to participate in the CSIRO
Business Higher Education Roundtable (BHERT) Leadership
in Innovation: Achievement through Teams program.
- Awarded PhD from Wageningen Agricultural University, The Netherlands.
