International Conference on Mycorrhizal Fungi, Granada, Spain
In July 2006, PhD candidate Bree Wilson presented a poster at the 5th International Conference on Mycorrhizal Fungi held in Granada, Spain. The theme of the conference was 'Mycorrhiza for Science and Society'. Over 600 delegates representing 50 countries attended the conference, highlighting the importance of mycorrhiza research in agriculture and sustainable resource management worldwide.

With support from the of the E H Graham Centre, Bree Wilson is currently undertaking PhD research in the School of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences of Charles Sturt University. Her research looks at the effects of dryland salinity on the genetic and functional diversity of mycorrhizal fungi. Conferences sessions of particular relevance to her work included mechanisms in stress resistance/tolerance, population biology of mycorrhizal fungi, functional diversity in mycorrhiza, biodiversity and ecological impacts, anthropogenic impacts on mycorrhiza diversity and functioning and improved inoculum technology and implementation.
Bree had the opportunity to visit the mycorrhiza research station in Granada (Estación Experimental del Zaidín) and meet with researcher Juan Manuel Ruiz-Lozano, whose research focuses on mycorrhiza and plant responses to saline and drought environments. The conference was an invaluable learning experience and provided a fantastic opportunity to make contacts in the mycorrhizal fungi field.
