Seminar Series 2011
The University's Role in a Changing World
| Time: Date: Venue: Presenter: |
1:30pm Tuesday, 8 February 2011 Green Room, Graham Building, (School of Animal & Veterinary Sciences) Professor Frank Garry, Colorado State University |
The Land Grant University system in the U.S. was a unique model when it was established because it used public funding and focused on a tripartite system of student teaching, research, and cooperative extension. As U.S. tax-based public support has diminished for these University endeavors, questions arise about the balance between funding needs and the integration of these historical activities. If personnel have to 'follow the money' then the agenda pursued is the agenda of the funding source, which may be different from the university mission. In other words, the institution moves toward asking "Where's the money" rather than focusing on "What's the problem?" Furthermore, following the money tends to diminish pursuit of great teaching since this funding tends to be in short supply. Will a university do better to pursue whatever path leads to funding resources, or to establish metrics of performance that attract novel sources of support? Professor Garry will present some of the thoughts on the University's role within this changing landscape as it pertains to his research, teaching, and extension endeavors at Colorado State University over the past 24 years.
