In New Zealand, endophyte alkaloids have been of interest since the link was made between lolitrem B and ryegrass staggers.  More alkaloids have been identified over time as it has become apparent that they are of particular importance to New Zealand’s agriculture.  Routine analysis now includes alkaloids relating to animal health (lolitrem B, epoxy-janthitrems, ergovaline) and protection of pastures from insect pests (peramine, lolines, epoxy-janthitrems).  Modern chemistry instruments have allowed more thorough investigations of the biosynthetic pathways of the alkaloids, leading to greater understanding of the gene functions and new incites into the roles of the alkaloids (and their intermediates) in plant protection.
