Career Brief
Dr Friend completed a BSc (Hons - Wool and Pastoral Science) at University of NSW (UNSW), before undertaking a PhD in ruminant nutrition at UNSW.
Dr Friend held a lecturing position in Animal Production at University of Tasmania's School of Agricultural Science before taking up the position of Lecturer in School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences (now School of Animal and Veterinary Sciences - SAVS) with Charles Sturt University (CSU) in 2003. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2006.
Although Dr Friends training is in ruminant nutrition, he has been actively involved in research projects ranging from nutrition (both ruminant and monogastric) to farming systems research.

- EverGraze - Investigation of grazing systems to increase profitability and improve NRM outcomes. (CRC for Future Farm Industries, MLA, AWI)
Teaching
The subject areas taught by Dr Friend include Animal Nutrition, Sheep Production, and wool metrology, processing and marketing.
Dr Friend is currently Honours Coordinator for SAVS and is actively involved in the supervision of Honours, Masters and PhD students, including:
- John Broster (PhD) - Shelter and new-born lamb survival.
- Catherine Gulliver (PhD) - Nutritional effects on ovulation rate in merinos
- Maggie Raeside (PhD) - Ecology of Tall Fescue under grazing
- Belinda Drury (Hons) - Feed wastage in the NE Victorian dairy industry
