He was Principal Research Scientist with NSW Agriculture (now NSW Department of Primary Industries) until 1999, when he was appointed the Foundation Chair in Farming Systems at the University of Sydney. He was appointed to the same position with Charles Sturt University, Orange when the Orange Campus was formally transferred between the two Universities.
Professor Kemp has a background in agronomy, plant physiology, applied ecology and the management of livestock grazing systems, with his research focus aimed at developing the applied discipline of sustainable farming; the management and integration of soils, plants, animals, economics and sociology into viable, sustainable enterprises.
Professor Kemp has worked in the subtropics and temperate zones on pastures, grasslands, crops (wheat), forage and livestock production systems. The aim of recent work has been to devise cost-effective, sustainable management practices for livestock production from degraded grasslands, both in western China and Australia.
Research and Teaching
Research
- Grassland projects with emphasis on ecology and management of serrated tussock, of low-cost rehabilitation of perennial grass swards and improving pasture establishment. (MLA, LWA, AWI, Future Farming Industries CRC)
- Improving incomes of small-holders and rehabilitating the grasslands of western China. (ACIAR, DAFF, AGO)
- Sustainable cropping systems. (GRDC)
Teaching
Subject areas Professor Kemp has taught in include Agronomy, Plants in Agriculture, Pasture Production and Management; Grazing Management.

Professor Kemp is on the editorial boards of the journals Crop and Pasture Science, Grass and Forage Science, International Journal of Rural Management and Australian Farm Business Management.
He chairs the committee planning the 2013 International Grassland Congress in Australia.
Interests
- Sustainable agriculture to improve the long term viability of farms and rural communities while rehabilitating and, or maintaining the environment.
- Development of processes for the analysis of results that bridge the gap between science and end users.
- The use of research techniques to analyse and improve the management of farms.
