Dr Martin has a strong background in wheat breeding, first as a wheat breeder with the Victorian Department of Agriculture at Horsham and then with NSW Agriculture (now NSW DPI) at Wagga Wagga. In both these positions he managed or so-managed the wheat breeding programs, setting and implementing the breeding strategies, which culminated in the breeding and release of 20 varieties.
