Career Brief

Mr Piltz completed a BSc degree in Wool and Pastoral Science in 1982. In 1984 he joined NSW DPI as a Technical Officer and worked on various forage conservation and feed evaluation research projects. He completed a MRurSc entitled ‘The digestibility of Australian maize silages’ during that time.

In 2003 Mr Piltz was appointed inaugural National Coordinator of the TopFodder Silage program, which promoted best-practice silage management to the dairy industry, and was subsequently extended to beef and sheep producers. Mr Piltz was a major author and co-editor of the internationally acclaimed publication ‘Successful Silage’ that was the major reference book for the the TopFodder Silage program. Successful Silage was translated in Chinese version and released in 2008. Mr Piltz was appointed to his current position of Livestock Research Officer in October 2005 and continues to conduct feed evaluation and forage conservation research. Since 2006 he has been involved with a project to increase dairy production in the Tibet Autonomous Region of China.

Research

Research is focused around the role for conserved forages in sustaining Australian agriculture and improving productivity of livestock industries.
