Career Brief
After graduating from the University of New England with BRurSc (Hons), Dr Southwell worked in private industry, including the wool and cotton industries, a private research organisation.
Dr Southwell enrolled for PhD studies with Charles Sturt University (CSU) in 2002 investigating the soil water dynamics beneath native pasture communities. The scope of the investigations enabled Dr Southwell to work with scientists in a range of disciplines, industry partners and farmers, conducting farm experiments and constructing simulation models. The PhD has recently been awarded.
While undertaking PhD studies Dr Southwell assisted with delivery the agricultural systems component of CSU's BAppSc (Agriculture) degree.
Dr Southwell joined the staff of CSU in 2007 as Associate lecturer in Agricultural Systems and Extension.
Research and Teaching
Dr Southwell is coordinator of the subjects 'Professional practice in Agriculture and Horticulture' and 'Introduction to Agricultural and Horticultural Systems'
She assists with the subject 'Agricultural extension' and coordinates work experience within the Bachelor of Applied Science (Agriculture) degree.
Dr Southwell is also involved in the State Government's "Science in Schools" initiative.

Dr Southwell is currently involved in preparing a bid to hold the International Grasslands Congress in Australia in 2013.
